Environmental restoration work at Aztec National Monument began last month with a grant to plant native plants and remove non-native invasive species. The park also recently announced new hours to better address park users needs. The New Mexico State Parks Division is looking for feedback to inform the San Juan River part of its Navajo Lake State Park Management Plan. And the US Highway 550 connection along Grand View bridge has been postponed to mid-June. Work began last month on soil restoration work at Aztec National Monument. Through a $344,000 grant to the monument, invasive and non-native plants will be removed and native species will be planted in their place. A fenced off area behind the Aztec West Great House will play host to the first part of the project where species like big basin sage, blue gamma, and salt brush will be planted and kept safe until established. The rehab is meant to help stabilize the area from ongoing soil erosion and to better protect excavated areas from wind erosion and climate change. Most of the land on the surrounding Aztec ruins was agricultural land until it became a national monument and little to no restoration work has been done since then. Additionally, beginning May 26th, daily hours at Aztec National Ruins have been moved up an hour The park now opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 5:00 The visitor center hours remain 9:00 to 5:00. The New Mexico State Parks Division is updating its five-year management plan for the Navajo Lake State Park and has opened a survey for public input. The survey is specifically geared toward the San Juan River portion of the management plan to ascertain how visitors to the park are looking to use the river. The San Juan River begins in the mountains by Wolf Creek Pass in southwestern Colorado, and flows through the Navajo Lake Reservoir before joining the Colorado River in Glen Canyon. The survey is open through July 31st and has 23 questions that'll take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Find that survey online. The Colorado Department of Transportation has announced that the opening of the Grand View Bridge will be postponed until the middle of June. Lighting at the Grand View Roundabout needs to be completed before the connection can commence, and the contractor was called away to assist areas in Houston that were impacted by recent storms.
