A newly renovated childbirth facility at San Juan Regional Medical Center has expanded care for mothers and babies across the region. You are watching the local News Network brought to you by Home to Suites and Craig Ace Hardware. I am Sadie Smith. The $4 million facility offers a higher level of care and personalized birth plans, including midwife assisted deliveries, pain intervention options, and support for both natural and C-section childbirths.
It's exciting for our community, for our staff. This group up here loves taking care of moms and babies and giving them the best start, and so it really just felt exciting and hopeful for the future.
The Childbirth Center features a level two special care nursery for mothers and babies that need extra support, telehealth services, and a baby friendly designation.
Our goal and focus is to keep moms and babies together right after delivery for that stabilization of vital signs to promote feeding. It really just helps get these babies and families off to a really good start.
S-J-R-M-C began planning the renovation in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed. The project construction began in 2024, and the center officially opened in October, 2025.
The total project was $4 million. It was all granted by state grants, funded by state grants, so COVID kind of put a delay in that. In 2020, it just shut everything down.
The Childbirth Center provides dedicated health professionals to assist mothers and babies across surrounding rural communities.
We are the regional medical center here, so we're very close to the Navajo reservation. So it really supports families located remotely to be able to have a place to come and deliver. And if you look at birthing centers throughout the US right now, a lot of them are closing down. They're closing this service line, so it's exciting for our community to know that we're here for years to come.
Phase two of the Childbirth Center is expected to be completed by mid-December and will include lactation offices and community classes. Additional details can be found on SJ MCs website.
