It's that time of the year, time to start thinking about summer internships. San Juan County is once again offering paid internships this summer for high school students. The proposed plan for the Animus district was approved at the City Council Work Session on March 19th, and ID'd five key areas of development, and it's not too late to sign up for the 100% San Juan Summit to learn how to improve access to local essential services. San Juan County is looking for summer interns, take advantage of a paid opportunity to explore careers in San Juan County. The positions are open to all San Juan County high school students or recent graduates. Find more information and submit your application online at San Juan County website. At the March 19th work session, the Farmington City Council gave unanimous approval to a plan for the Animus district presented by Sites Southwest. The plan outlined five major elements for the development of the district, including housing development, pedestrian connection between the Animus River and downtown waterfront development for educational and recreational use, trail connections between the hospital and river trails and incremental development with flexible use zoning. Housing was ID'd as a key element in the plan, as it will both bring more businesses to the area and provide more housing options for people working in the Healthcare Hub area of the Animus district. With a more housing focused approach, the implementation of the plan may take up to 10 years to accomplish with a price tag between $250,000 and two and a half million dollars. However, the most quickly implemented part of the plan, enhancing the aesthetics of the area and prioritizing cleanup of vacant properties, will cost less than $250,000 to implement and take around one to three years. The summit brings together service organizations and community leaders from across San Juan County and is geared toward educating the community about 100% community and how it can work in your county. This year's summit features co-director of 100% New Mexican, Dr. Catherine Ortega Courtney, who will present on the organization and the impact of community in creating change.
