Stay Safe and Warm this Winter

San Juan County Fire and Rescue wants to make sure your home is safeguarded against winter fires while keeping you and your family warm. Make sure to register for the annual ringing in Christmas Parade this year. And 100% San Juan County has launched a new directory of 10 essential services in San Juan County. The annual ringing in Christmas parade will be back in Farmington on December 1st. It's not too late to register to be in the parade, but make sure to get the registration in by Friday, November 18th. The parade will begin with a Christmas tree lighting at the Farmington Civic Center. Then follow Main Street from Wall Street to Auburn. The parade starts at 5:30 PM, so make sure to line up along historic downtown for the best spots! San Juan County Fire and Rescue wants to be sure you and your family stay safe and warm this winter. When the weather cools down outside, turning on the heat or lighting a fire feels and sounds so cozy, but be aware that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths in the winter. San Juan County Fire and Rescue have a few tips to keep you and your family safe this winter. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from the heating equipment. Have a three foot "kid-free zone" around open fires and space heaters. Never use your oven to heat your home. Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, and central heating equipment. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Always use the right kind of fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel burning space heaters. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cooled before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container in a safe distance away from your home. Test smoke alarms at least once a month.
